A cafe in Kapiti has sparked debate over how much people are willing to pay for a cheese scone after a disgruntled customer took to social media to complain about them hiking the price of their scones by $1.

The High Tide Cafe at Paraparaumu is now defending their "heavenly" cheese scone that's made with "tasty cheese" and "homogenised milk" that they're now charging $5.50 for.

Leigh Healy, the owner of the cafe north of Wellington, told TVNZ 1's Breakfast programme their scones are made with "real ingredients" and "with love".

"They're essentially a meal for somebody" Ms Healy said."They're substantially big and I think what really gives them the true value is there's more cheese in them than flour."

Ms Healy said the price of cheese has contributed to the spike in price.

"It"s worth letting the public know that we've sustained these scones at $4.50, we have only just put them up.

"We value generosity in our cafe and we value people feeling content in our cafe and that's of a higher value and we have built up an incredible clientele that comes from Palmerston North and Wellington just for our cheese scone."

TVNZ's Breakfast team was divided this morning on whether they would pay $5.50 for a cheese scone.

Hilary Barry said she "would not pay that much," while Matty McLean stated he would but it "has to be a good one and they have to toast it."

While Jack Tame listed the ingredients that are used to bake scones, Barry took the opportunity to give him some advice and warned him "not to put much butter in them."
