Southern students and pre-schoolers get a snow day off school - in November

Almost 800 students and pre-schoolers had a day off due to the snow and flooding overnight, the Ministry of Education says.

Up to 20cm of snow and heavy rain fell in many parts of the South Island overnight, leading to the closure today of seven schools and two early learning services in Otago and Southland.

Many of the schools had to close because school buses were unable to navigate roads covered with snow.

The schools affected are Tapanui School, Blue Mountain College, Heriot School, Northern Southland College, Lumsden School, Mossburn School and Garston School.

The early learning centres were Riverstones Early Learning Centre in Lumsden and Kidz Way Early Learning Centre in Tapanui.
