A couple of Auckland mums have started an inventive business turning human breast milk into soap.

Far from being weird the mums told TVNZ1's Seven Sharp: "Why would you use another species' milk on your children, when you could use your own?"

Freya Flockton and Jemma Hoyle met at antenatal class where they came up with their recipe for stay-at-home success.

"We had breast milk in our freezers, and rather than waste it, it's a tragedy to see it expire.

"Instead of putting coconut milk or cream into soap I just substituted my breast milk, otherwise after 24 hours in the fridge I would have fed it to the dog," Ms Hoyle told Seven Sharp.

Their soaps are made with ingredients foraged from Ms Hoyle's family farm, and from the pair of mum's themselves.

The soaps are doing so well they have asked other breastfeeding mums for any leftover milk they can use.

"We only use milk we couldn't feed to our children, so breast milk that we thawed in the fridge and they didn't drink.

"And a lot of people have a whole lot of breast milk in their freezer going to waste. And it's really sad because it's a lot of effort," Ms Hoyle said.

The new venture proving there are many ingredients to good parenting.
