Jacinda Ardern's partner Clarke Gayford has opened up to TVNZ1's Seven Sharp about their life in the lead up to and after the election.
Mr Gayford told Seven Sharp's Toni Street he felt protective of Ms Ardern during the tough campaign.
"I've never been more anxious and nervous about anyone else in my life than I was about Jacinda over the last two months.
"I'm still coming to terms with it but am enormously proud," Mr Gayford said. (Source: Other)
"There's all these external factors, people saying things that are untrue and articles coming out that are really false, so you fell really defensive," he said.
Mr Gayford also talked about the dramatic night where Ms Ardern became Prime Minister, saying no one in the Labour camp had any clue which way NZ First leader Winston Peters decision would go.
