Clarke Gayford has spoken to TVNZ1's Seven Sharp about the dramatic moment Jacinda Ardern found out she had just become New Zealand's 40th Prime Minister.
Speaking to Seven Sharp's Toni Street on the Waitemata Harbour, Mr Gayford said no one in the Labour camp had any idea which way Winston Peters would go when he made his live announcement to the nation.
"When it actually happened it was a case of watching it on TV and there was so much emotion in the room.
"You know these people have been working for nine years and it had all come down to that moment, so there was just a huge outpouring of emotion and relief," Mr Gayford said.
When asked how life has been for the couple in the last few months, Mr Gayford admitted it had been quite a ride.
"It's just been such a roller coaster. It wasn't that long ago that Jacinda was just a list MP and then we had the by-election in Mt Albert and she just hasn't stopped since then.
"I'm still coming to terms with it but am enormously proud," Mr Gayford said. (Source: Other)
"Now suddenly here we are and she is Prime Minister," he told Seven Sharp.
Mr Gayford doesn't see himself as influencing the direction of the country now he has our Prime Minister's ear.
"I've always had quite a strong interest in politics, but one of us doesn't like bringing her job home. So as much as I try and talk about it I've found that the most important thing you can do is just to be a distraction.
"Do normal things, like cook dinner and argue over who hasn't emptied the dishwasher," Mr Gayford said.
