Christchurch Airport is set to trial a new year-long approach to flight paths, starting this Thursday.

It will see planes fly higher over the city and release less carbon dioxide, bringing New Zealand even closer to global standards.

A spokesperson says it means moving away from current ground-based navigation aids and using a more accurate satellite-based system on board aircrafts.

The new system will allow for shorter, more direct paths.
