'It's going to be intense' - heavy downpours in Canterbury, gale force winds to slam Wellington

MetService is warning that poor weather is due to set in for much of the country this week, with several watches and warnings in place.

Southern and central New Zealand will be strongly affected by a deep low heading in from the west today and into tomorrow, with rain, wind and even some snow forecast.

Significant rainfall is expected is much of the South Island, while northwesterly gales will hit from Canterbury north to Taranaki, including Wellington, from later today.

Conditions should be pleasant in the upper North Island.
