Ahead of arguably the biggest horse race in the world, Kiwi horse Humidor is emerging as one of the favourites for tomorrow's Melbourne Cup.
Having finished runner up behind the legendary Winx during last week's Cox Plate, Humidor has cemented himself as one to watch in the race that stops a nation, and is promising to compete on racing's biggest stage.
"Ability wise, he's as good as any of them in there - and probably better," trainer Greg Trestrail told 1 NEWS.
Trestrail helped raise the five-year-old on a Waikato farm belonging to none other than former Olympian, Sonia Waddell, where Humidor stood out from a young age.
"He was really quirky as a foal actually," Waddell said.
"He was one of those horses that didn't seem to build on his experiences like other foals did."
Humidor's quirkiness so apparent, that breakers preparing to give up on training the foal, before Waddell convinced them otherwise.
That persistence from the owner would pay off, with legendary Australian trainer Darren Weir getting on board, helping turn Humidor into a genuine contender, much to Waddell's delight.
"It's real pinch yourself stuff at the moment in thoroughbred racing to even have a contender in the Melbourne Cup, let alone a horse that's capable of winning it is an absolute dream come true."
