Nearly 1000 anglers made the trip to North Canterbury’s most popular fishing lake this weekend.
The backcountry fishing season opened on Saturday, with north-westerly winds doing little to dampen the enthusiasm of anglers out on Lake Coleridge who were keen to catch some salmon, brown and rainbrow trout.
Fish and Game says rangers carried out checks on 460 anglers in the area but didn’t detect any offences.
Lake Coleridge, about 90 minutes from Christchurch, has attracted Canterbury anglers for generations.
It's one of the few lakes in New Zealand where an angler can catch all three species of fish in one lake.
