One person dead after serious crash leaves part of State Highway 1 closed in Northland

One person has died after a serious crash in Northland this afternoon.

Police say the person is believed to have died at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 3pm on State Highway 1 at Towai, Northland.

State Highway 1 is currently closed in both directions at the scene and diversions are in place at Ruapekapeka Rd and Akerama Rd for light cars and vehicles only.

At this stage the only available diversion for heavy vehicles is taking the alternate State Highway 15 route from Kaikohe or Whangarei.

The Serious Crash Unit is attending the incident.
