Warren Gatland spoke to TVNZ1's Seven Sharp about the ups and downs of touring New Zealand while coaching the British and Irish Lions in June.

Gatland believed the New Zealand media coverage of his team was appalling.

The coach was not happy how the NZ Herald claimed he would be targeting his son Bryn Gatland during the Lions' first game of the tour against the New Zealand Barbarians.

"I was disgusted by that headline I thought it was out of order. And to think that a father would go in, for our family it was one of our proudest moments in both of our rugby careers."

The NZ Herald headlined one of their stories 'Gatland to target Barbarians' weakest link – his son.'

He did admit that the Lions tour wasn't all bad with fans creating a great atmosphere for players and coaching staff.

"The atmosphere at the grounds was phenomenal, both sets of supporters. Hospitality – unbelievable."
