Students at Auckland's Rangitoto College are outraged at a school rule banning makeup and forcing those wearing it at school to take it off.
A teacher's note detailing the rules has been circulating students at the North Shore high school, with many students saying it limits their right to express themselves, NZ Herald reports.
The note reads: "No make-up whatsoever. The deans have a fresh supply of wipes, so any transgressors should be sent immediately to the student centre. Please also inform their dean."
However the rule on Rangitoto College's website reads slightly differently: "Lipstick and eye make-up ARE NOT PERMITTED", in a section of rules about uniform requirements.
That means, under the old rules stated on the website students were allowed to wear foundation, concealer, blush and bronzer.
But the rules laid out in the teacher's note suggests students are forbidden from wearing any of these products to school.
"Everybody's pretty mad about the new rules," year 11 student Grace Jack told the Herald.
"We think it's a bit unfair...we're just a bit disappointed about it because we don't think our makeup should affect our education."
Several other students agreed and have voiced opinions about the rule on social media.
But the school's principal, Patrick Gale, said that is was a pretty common policy.
"This is not a new rule and as always staff discretion will be used," Ms Gale said.
"At Rangitoto College we have a jewellery and makeup policy that has been in place for 30 years."
