An international expert says it's time to change our perception of what retirement looks like.
Canadian Barry LaValley has been in New Zealand promoting his book, So You Think You're Ready to Retire?
The first thing Mr LaValley points out is his problem with the very definition of the word retirement.
"The word means to quit, to walk away from. It's not what we want to do, It's not what I want to do," he said.
Mr LaValley says too many of us think the only planning required for retirement is the financial kind.
"It's not the most important thing but retirement advisers work for financial institutions. They have made money the key to retirement happiness.
"If you have a date and some money in mind, everything's bliss! Except, it's not! It's life!" he said.
Mr LaValley outlines a number of ways to help stay active and feeling relevant when you retire in his book.
One of his top tips is that it's never too early to start planning ahead for a smooth run at retirement.
