Kevin Spacey has today revealed he is gay, as he responded to an accusation he made a sexual advance to a 14-year-old actor more than 30 years ago.
In an interview with Buzzfeed News, US actor Anthony Rapp alleged that during a 1986 New York party, Spacey picked him up and lay on top of him in an attempt "to seduce" him.
In a statement posted on his Twitter feed today, Spacey said he was "beyond horrified" to hear of the story.
Spacey did not deny what had happened however, only saying he did not remember the incident.
"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor," Spacey wrote.
"I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago.
"But if I did behave as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour."
The apology from Spacey then went on to reveal details of life "as a gay man".
"I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fuelled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy," he wrote.
"As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women.
"I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man."
Spacey has won two Oscars for his performances in 1995' s The Usual Suspects and 1999's American Beauty.
Rapp said he was confident coming forward with his story now, in the wake of sexual assault and rape allegations leveled at Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
