Partying Tongan league supporters blocked road, but police say street party went off without incident

About 100 people blocked a road in Otahuhu, South Auckland after Tonga's league win over Scotland saw an impromptu street party formed, but the festivities went without incident, say police.

The Tongan team beat Scotland 50-4 at the Rugby League World Cup in Cairns last night, prompting rowdy fans to hit the streets of South Auckland to celebrate the impressive result.

Police were called at 10.15pm to High St where the group of people were gathered around vehicles.

Video footage shows people waving Tongan flags from their cars.

"Our police at the scene demonstrated tolerance and understanding by encouraging the revellers to disperse until the street was cleared without incident," a spokesperson said.

They put up diversions which meant vehicles could only exit the street.

"Police encourage anyone celebrating the tournament to behave responsibly, and when in public, display due consideration for others."

Yesterday's game was Tonga's only pool match in Australia, with their next two taking place in Hamilton at Waikato Stadium against Samoa next Saturday and the Kiwis the following weekend.

The team, strengthened significantly by the late additions of NRL superstars Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita, touch down in New Zealand on Tuesday in Auckland.
