New Employment Minister Willie Jackson has labelled former MP Hone Harawira "an idiot" and a disgrace after Mr Harawira called him "a skunk" and challenged him to a one-on-one live on television.

While Mr Harawira was being interviewed on TVNZ1's Te Karere this afternoon, he looked directly into the camera and addressed comments to Mr Jackson.

"Now you're a dirty low down skunk. And you need a kick in the arse," Mr Harawira said.

"You need a kick in the arse for saying that our people don't care about the foreshore and seabed being stolen," he said.

"We did then, we do now and we always will.

"Anytime you want to argue that point, brother, anytime, any place, you give me a bell, you give me a bell brother, me and you."

Presenter Scotty Morrison, speaking Te Reo, had repeatedly tried to interrupt him and get the interview back on track, but Mr Harawira continued his tirade in English.

The Maori Party and Hone Harawira's Mana lost every Maori seat in last month's election to Willie Jackson's Labour Party.
