US rapper Eminem will donate the money he won in a court proceeding with the National Party to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

The High Court this week ruled that the National Party infringed copyright by using a song which sounded like Eminem's Lose Yourself for its election advertising.

A pop music expert today told the Wellington court the song at the centre of the case is itself not an original.

National has to pay Eight Mile Style NZD$600,000 with interest, dating back to June 28, 2014.

Speaking to Variety Magazine a representative said the rapper would donate the money towards hurricane relief efforts.

"Eminem was not party to this lawsuit nor was he consulted regarding the case.

"Any monetary settlement he receives from it will be donated to hurricane relief."

Eminem teamed up with Detroit-based company StockX to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Harvey back in September.

So far they've raised over $US600,000 for the relief effort.
