People standing on an Auckland wharf had a close encounter with an orca and her calf which swam under the wharf this afternoon.
Onlookers on the Murrays Bay wharf on the North Shore were delighted when the orca mum and her baby approached and swam right under their feet, as other members of the pod passed nearby about 2pm.
In video of the encounter carried by Stuff, a fisherman is heard declaring "whoa" as the killer whales pass under his line, and other spectators gasp with delight.
The pod was reportedly first spotted in Torbay, then at Browns Bay before they Murrays Bay sighting, and they were last seen heading south down the coast.
At Labour Weekend a group of swimmers were delighted by a orca whale swimming just off a beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.
