Planning to visit Honolulu? Be warned – texting while you cross the road is now banned

October 26, 2017

A new law banning texting while walking across the street has come into effect in Honolulu in Hawaii today.

Called the "distracting walking" law, Hawaiian police will now have the power to fine people $50 (NZD) on the spot if they see them texting while crossing the road.

The number of US pedestrians killed in traffic accidents has risen 22 per cent since 2014.

Some US states such as California are considering introducing state-wide laws enforcing no texting while crossing the road.

This California law will be considered in January 2018.
