Winston Peters plans to bring his experience to the table to develop New Zealand's foreign affairs, after securing the role as Minister today.
Mr Peters also picked up Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for State Owned Enterprises and Minister for Racing.
Mr Peters was Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Labour-led government in 2005.
"I think I can bring a thing called experience," he told reporters today.
He said he turned around New Zealand's relationship with US and expanding New Zealand's relationship with eastern Asia.
Mr Peters said he does "not think North Korea is an utterly hopeless case", based on his previous work attempting to negotiate with the regime.
"We did have some success."
He said it was an unusual outcome but perhaps more could be done.
"We need to better understand that region.
"I'm concerned about any growth on nuclear weaponry whether it be in Iran or North Korea."
When it came to New Zealand's relationship with Australia he said:"I think we can’t deny it, in 2017 and our relationship is not what it should be."
He said New Zealand and Australia needed to put their "cards on the table, and being honest would be a good start".
Mr Peters said New Zealand's relationship with pre and post-Brexit UK would not change.
"We were on the same side then, we're on the same side now."
Mr Peters also takes on the role of Minister for State Owned Enterprises.
He called the selling of previous assets as "a halfway house to privitisaton".
