The Auckland Rugby League have moved one step closer to acquiring New Zealand NRL club the Warriors, coming to an agreed asking price with current owner Eric Watson, according to reports by the New Zealand Herald.

The NZ Herald reported the ARL will likely take a majority share through Carlaw Park Heritage Trust.

A settlement date could be sorted out by the end of next month.

The ARL are set to meet with management and coaching staff at the Warriors over coming days and weeks.

"For us it's a logical and good step," ARL chairman Cameron McGregor told NZ Herald.

"Having corporate partners is important because they bring that corporate discipline, which is essential. Obviously as well as a football club this is a big brand and a big business.

"We know a lot about the football side of things but having that corporate discipline is important for us to mitigate any risk. We have had some good discussions with a few interested parties," McGregor told the Herald.

If the ARL are successful it could mean the talent from Australia might be lessened, giving local players more options to continue their career in Auckland.
