Out of 158 airlines across the world, Air New Zealand has been named the top airline by US magazine Conde Nast Traveller.

More than 300,000 readers submitted ratings and comments to rank several different travel aspects, such as the best hotels, cities, airports and cruise lines in the world.

The magazine, which publishes travel news, tips and ideas praised the airline's attention to comfort.

"With some of the longest flights in the world, the Kiwi carrier pays close attention to seat comfort; legroom is ample on its wide-body," the magazine wrote on its website.

Qatar Airlines came in second place followed closely by Singapore Airlines.

Air New Zealand Chief Marketing and Customer Officer Mike Tod says the award is terrific for the airline.

"This latest award is a testament to the consistent hard work of our 11,800 staff right around the world and is also a reflection of our continued investment in the customer experience in the past few years on the ground, inflight and through our digital channels," Mr Tod said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Air New Zealand was also award Airline of the Year by AirlineRating's.com and Australasia's Leading Airline at the World Travel Awards.

The announcement was printed in the magazine's 30th annual Readers' Choice Awards.
