The Black Sticks women have destroyed opponents Papua New Guinea 33-0 in their opening match of the Oceania Cup in Sydney last night.

In a mismatch of epic proportions, star player Samantha Harrison scored nine goals on her own, while Olivia Merry and Rachel McCann picked up seven apiece, with the score at an unreal 20-0 in New Zealand's favour at halftime.

The Oceania Cup sees Australia and New Zealand face off with a developing nation from the region every two years, with the winner gaining World Cup qualification, although both New Zealand sides have already sealed their spots at next year's tournaments in India (men) and England (women).

The 33-0 scoreline is a new record for the side, surpassing the 31-0 victory over Samoa in 2015.

The Black Sticks women are next in action against hosts Australia on Saturday, while the men open their tournament against Australia later today.
