Police say this morning's crash in South Auckland where a fleeing driver was killed and two others were seriously hurt is "incredibly tragic".

Video footage from the scene shows the stolen car - a 2002 Honda Torneo - which has had its roof cut off by Fire and Rescue NZ.

Senior Sergeant Amber Stobie said no officer wants to start their day by witnessing a death on the road.

"It's incredibly tragic for everyone that's involved," she said.

The two female occupants in the car are undergoing surgery in Middlemore Hospital.

Police and the IPCA are investigating.
