Police are pleading for drivers to take some responsibility for themselves and others after nine people died on New Zealand roads at the weekend.
In a statement today, police said the road toll for 2017 now stands at 292 - up 41 on the same time last year.
As well as those who died, at least ten other people were injured or seriously injured.

Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing Sandra Venables said the fatalities this weekend will have families up and down the country devastated.
"Every death is reported as a number, but each number has a face, a name and a family," she said.
"They leave behind loved ones whose lives have been changed forever.
"Those that have been seriously injured can face months if not years of rehabilitation and treatment ... we cannot continue to tolerate the loss."
She said police can only do so much to help people, and it is ultimately up to drivers to protect themselves and others.
"Every time you get behind the wheel you hold your life and the lives of your passengers and your fellow road users in your hands.
"Please take this responsibility seriously – wear your seat belt, make sure your passengers are wearing seat belts, watch your speed and drive to the conditions."
