The driver died and two female passengers have been hospitalised.

Bairds Road is closed between the intersections of Clayton Avenue and Everitt Road.

Police say the road will be closed for some time and motorists should avoid the area. Diversions have been put in place.

Senior Sargeant Amber Stobie said the IPCA will be informed and Police will also conduct their own investigation into the crash.

It comes after a horror weekend on the roads, with three people killed in a Southland crash last night, and two more dying near Te Kuiti earlier in the day.
