Phil Goff wins race to become Auckland's new mayor after claiming over 47 per cent of the vote

Phil Goff has been elected as Auckland's new mayor.

The former Labour MP replaces Len Brown.

Auckland Council said Mr Goff claimed 179,206 votes, or 47.6 per cent.

Mr Goff appeared delighted to have clinched Auckland's top job and is promising to improve the lot of beleaguered residents.

The 63-year-old swept into the role with a commanding lead over his nearest rival, netting nearly half of the votes cast. (Source: Other)

Mr Goff's family is supporting him at celebrations in central Auckland.

Vic Crone was second with 105,413, while Chloe Swarbrick was third with 26,474 votes.
