A drag queen pageant in the Cook Islands has helped to raise awareness and acceptance in the country while pushing for the legalisation of homosexuality.

The Mizz Jewel competition was - like any drag queen pageant - not without its share of drama, according to organiser Valentino Wichman.

Held in Rarotonga, the event is about "letting people know that we are here and we are part of normal families," Ms Wichman says.

A strong HIV prevention and sexual health theme was also present, with one contestant even wearing a dress made from condoms for the cause.
