A man has died following a suspected shark attack while in fishing waters.

Emergency services were called to Hull River boat ramp, about 160km south of Cairns in far-north Queensland, shortly before 12pm on Sunday (local time).

It followed reports a man had been attacked by a shark while out at Kennedy Shoal, a stretch of water in the Coral Sea.

The 39-year-old man was retrieved from the water but he died suddenly from his injuries, police said.

Kennedy Shoal is a shallow stretch of water most popular for fishing mackerel and snapper, according to the Fishbrain website.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
