Australia have edged the Kiwi Ferns 10-4 in a fierce trans-Tasman Pacific Championship battle at Eden Park.

The leading nations were separated by just one try in a game of quality defence and end-to-end action, a dress rehearsal for next week's tournament final.

Down by six points with five minutes on the the clock, the NZ women remained in the contest, trailing the Jillaroos by a converted try.

Seconds earlier, Australia were poised to pounce, until outstanding goal-line defence from the Ferns denied them a chance to extend their advantage.

The highlight for the home side was a superb 70-metre run from back-rower and Dally M Rookie of the Year Annessa Biddle, which saw the Kiwi Ferns hit the scoreboard.

Australia scored first in the opening half, with just one try coming in the opening half hour of play.

Australia broke the deadlock through Jessica Sergis, who beat three defenders and powered to the line.

A second try to the Jillaroos came for Australian debutante Abbi Church, who pounced on the loose ball to score, later collecting the player-of-the-match award.

The teams meet again next week in the final at Sydney.
