The body of a missing swimmer off the coast of Auckland was found by search crews this afternoon.

The body was located at Hamilton's Gap, north of Waiuku.

While formal identification is yet to take place, police believe it to be 19-year-old Hiran Joseph — who went missing while swimming at Karioitahi Beach on Tuesday.

"Police have informed Hiran’s family, who are being provided with support at this incredibly difficult time."

Surf Life Saving Northern Region's (SLSNR) general manager Zac Franich acknowledged the Kariaotahi Surf Club and its members for their "ongoing efforts and dedication" alongside police, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and LandSAR.

"Volunteer surf lifeguards from the Kariaotahi search and rescue squad have been involved in extensive searches over the past five days. We would like to acknowledge the dedication of all those involved for their ongoing and tireless actions," he said.

Franich also issued SLSNR's condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

Police said a rāhui on recreational fishing and swimming in the area has now been lifted.

"Police thank the public for their compassion and understanding while the rāhui was in place."
